Sooo I’m normally a mood reader and I just read whatever I want to read without worrying about whether it’s on my tbr list or not but there’s quite a few books I want to read in September so I figured it was best a created a tbr, for the first time in months haha.
I was definitely blessed by the NetGalley Gods when I was approved for These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. A 1920s Romeo and Juliette retelling with monsters set in Shanghai sounds right up my street, I have started reading this but I’m taking my time because I really want to enjoy reading this book, I’ll also be posting my review on here when I’ve managed to put my thoughts into coherent sentences haha.
The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang-a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.
But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns-and grudges-aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.
I’m really loving my Throne of Glass series reread and I’m now ready to read Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas, don’t hate me but I’ve remembered why I really loved Celaena and Chaol! I’m remembering soo many little details that I’d forgotten about because I first read this series in 2018!
Celaena Sardothien’s only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan’s Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn. Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King’s Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan’s biggest threat – and his own toughest enemy.
While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beastly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?
September also has a lot of new releases and a couple of sequels I’m excited to read, first up is the sequel to Crave by Tracy Wolff, Crush. Crave really surprised me as I thought it was gonna be some cringey Twilight rip off but I actually really loved it and I cannot wait to see what happens in Crush, especially after the cliff-hanger ending in Crave. I reviewed Crave which you can read here. (I do believe that Crave comes out in the UK on 29th September, which is the same time Crush is released so I’m not sure what’s happening there haha.)
When she arrived at Katmere Academy, mortal Grace’s world turned upside down. Now back at the school, she is haunted by fragments of days she doesn’t remember living, as she struggles to understand who, or what, she really is.
Finally reunited with Jaxon, Grace begins to feel safe again – until Jaxon’s brother, Hudson, reappears with a vengeance. He insists there are secrets Grace doesn’t know, threatening to drive a wedge between her and Jaxon forever.
But there are far worse enemies at their doorstep – and the only thing Hudson and Jaxon can agree on is that leaving Katmere would mean Grace’s certain death.
Unless they can defeat an unspeakable evil, everyone’s lives are at risk. But winning will require a sacrifice. And it could be more than they can give.
Another sequel I’m excited for is Majesty by Katharine McGee which is the second book in the American Royals series which is based upon the idea that rather than the USA having a President in power, they have their own royal family. Now, I do quite like the royal family so the idea of America having a royal family and a female heir to the throne really intrigued me. I binge read American Royals and I’ve got a feeling Majesty will be another binge read.
Beatrice Washington now rules America as its first ever queen, but her family are more concerned about rushing through her arranged marriage to a man she barely knows. No one can know that her heart really belongs to her bodyguard – but even their love is under threat.
Meanwhile, Princess Samantha is under more scrutiny than ever before – and she still longs to be with her sister’s fiancee. But with no sign of Bea’s wedding being called off, she’s surprised to find someone else catching her eye. Nina Gonzalez is also tangled up with someone she never expected to be. She and Ethan are both nursing broken hearts, and it’s not long before they find themselves pulled irresistably together.
Luckily for Daphne Deighton, Prince Jeff’s grief for his father makes him a prime target for her attentions. She’s the closest she’s been in years to getting what she wants . . . so why can’t she let the idea of her and Ethan go?As the royal wedding of the century creeps ever closer, will these four young women get what they want – or will their hearts be broken forever?
One last release I’m looking forward to reading this month is Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. I was lucky enough to be given an E-arc of this book so keep an eye out for my review. Legendborn just sounds incredible, it’s a YA contemporary fantasy with a really interesting premise.
After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential programme for bright high-schoolers at UNC – Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape – until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A flying demon feeding on human energies. A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down. And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts – and fails – to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.
The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.
She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets – and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down – or join the fight.
I’m also hoping to finish Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon. Now I have a love hate relationship with the Outlander series, I’m desperate to watch the show but I want to read the books first so I have a lot to catch up on, but there are some aspects of the first book Outlander that’s a bit iffy for me, there’s an incidence of domestic violence, rape, abuse, torture and it can be quite hard to read but overall I did enjoy it so I’m giving the second book ago.
For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to the majesty of Scotland’s mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones, about a love that transcends the boundaries of time, and about James Fraser, a warrior whose gallantry once drew the young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.
Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful daughter as Claire’s spellbinding journey continues in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Edward Stuart, in a race to thwart a doomed uprising, and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.
